Our registrars undertake 4 year training to qualify as a specialist dermatologist. They train at King Edward VIII Hospital, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, RK Khan Hospital, Addington Hospital and Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. Our registrars register for the MMed (Dermatology) degree at UKZN, and are required to pass the College of Medicine exams in Dermatology, qualifying for Fellowship of the College of Dermatologists: FCDerm(SA). This is a two- part exam. Part 1.
We have also had International Students spend an elective in the dept. In 2013, we had one from UCSF, California and one from Nigeria. The Nigerian dermatologist spent 4 months and received training in general and paediatric dermatology. She presented a paper at the National Dermatology congress which has been accepted for publication and registered her MMed Degree while she was here.
